The US Gulf Coast dive spots of Texas and Louisiana offer diving in lakes and at scuba parks but the real diving highlight is the Flower Garden Banks National Maritime Sanctuary which is located in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. Hammerhead sharks frequent the sanctuary from January to March whilst spotted eagle rays are seen throughout this time. Whale Sharks put in an appearance from July to September.
The sanctuary is also home to an incredible quantity of coral covering more than half of the reef. Many fish species play in and out of the coral including damsel fish and yellow head wrasses.
