Latvia is home to some spectacular wreck diving in great visibility of 35 metres. Most of the wrecks are untouched with ammunition still in place. SS Hornstein is one such well preserved wreck which is best appreciated over two dives.
SS Ammerland is another well preserved wreck, an armed German cargo ship with anti-aircraft guns still on board, an Enigma coding machine and even uniforms. Yet another World War II wreck the 100 meteres steamer SS Zonnewyk still contains live ammunition including hand held rifles and is surrounded by mines.
Many of the wrecks in Latvia are from World War II but there are some more recent ones including a timber carrier and a vessel once used by the Russians to control MIR space station satellites.
