Gibraltar is home to a vast array of shipwrecks, some sunk deliberately to create reefs others are historical wrecks waiting to be explored. The wrecks ensure a diverse range of marine life where the Atlantic meets the Med adding to this variety.
Noted shipwrecks include those from World War II and the Napoleonic times. The SS Excellent is one of the most popular, a 1,082 tonnes steamer sank following a collision in 1888, and she is now home to gorgonians, fan worms, spider crab, lobsters and conger eels. The Camp Bay conservation site is also a major attraction where ships have been deliberately sunk to create artificial reefs for box fish, damsel fish, Atlantic torpedo rays and octopus.
